The MSC Logo is respect for the 'Fallschirmjäger', who were the original modern airborne/special forces. Yes, they were German, but not all Nazis, just good and effective soldiers. They pre-date Commando's (Allied WW2), Allied Parachute/Airborne Divisions, LRRP/SAS, etc.
Their philosophy of small, fast and dominating operations on the battlefield is the kind of play the MSC teams favour as opposed to the more static army-style tactics. This was copied and developed into what we now know as Special Forces in most military forces around the globe.
Their basic image was imposed over the southern cross to give it our identity.
